Nomadic Archive Introduction of The Listening Atlas

What Is Happening?

Since the inception of this fundraiser, a handful of these updates grazed the subject of a documentation project. This week is centering on the project itself. Clove and I are building and restoring this motorhome of ours to begin a project that traces the roots of care, death, memory, and belonging.

You are in support of a movable base of operations that contains long term fieldwork, documentation, interviews, writing, and community engagement.

Our Introduction and Overview

The Listening Atlas - a traveling archive documenting deathcare practices, cultural traditions, grief rituals, oral histories, field observations, visual storytelling, somatic inquiry, poetry, photography, sketches, artifacts, and community wisdom across the United States.

Our travels on the road are being facilitated by The Listening House; a mobile field base, archive station, and artist studio dedicated to preserving the living culture of care at the transitional thresholds of life and death. A waystation between destinations. The Listening House is a place of collection, of journeys, places, and relationships, with listening as our methodology. It makes this project possible.

My Role and Its Description

As The Listening Cartographer, I will be the field researcher, observational witness, artist, and death worker. The archive aims to include grief studies, oral histories, cultural preservation, art exhibitions, ecological relationships, elderhood, caregiving, and community memory. Our reach extends an invitation for support with foundations, artists, cultural institutions, universities, hospices, anthropologists, oral historians, museums, and community organizations.

The Mycelial Connection

The Listening Atlas is moving like another layer to Under The Root. A branch swaying in the breezes as it hits the sunlight and then the moonlight, night after night, day after day. The roots continue to grow, exchanging information, carrying memory, nourishing relationships, connecting one living thing to another. We listen and find a practice of what lives beneath the surface.

The Present Moment

Right now, the immediate priority remains the same by continuing to build a safe and stable living environment for me and Clove. The repairs, restoration work, and systems upgrades currently in the infancy stage are the foundation that will eventually give way so this project moves from vision into practice. The Listening Atlas is still in its early stages too, but the vision is becoming more transparent every week.

Gratitude

We acquired a motorhome, moved our belongings out of the 10-year home, and began the restoration. This happened because of your tenderness. I hope you will continue to be engaged with our updates, share this fundraiser or our project with those around you, meander through our handcrafted goods and community resources, plus be kind with you and yours as the days move.

Thank you so very much.
