WAYPOINTS - SEEDS OF MORTALITY

Waypoints: Seeds of Mortality is a traveling branch of The Listening Atlas, a digital cultural map and physical reliquary documenting human thoughts, conversations, and perspectives about mortality. Each Waypoint brings together a geographic location, a physical Seed made from materials encountered there, and an archival record of a seven-question conversation.

WHAT IS THIS WAYPOINT?

- a small, significant point of human orientation on the map, marking where they stand in relation to death

- a place where you pause, locate yourself, notice where you are

- a traveling branch of The Listening Atlas that is both a digital cultural map and a physical reliquary of human thoughts, across the globe, with regard to mortality

HOW IS THE WAYPOINT DOCUMENTED?

1. A Waypoint
A numbered geographic point

2. A Seed
A physical artifact made from materials encountered within the immediate environment and handed to the person in our conversation

3. A Record
The 7 question conversation is preserved as an audio recording and expanded into an archival entry

CONSENT AGREEMENT

Every Waypoint encounter begins with giving humans a clear choice about whether their anonymous voice, words, and location may be archived publicly. This is a way to acknowledge the gracious generosity of the conversation.

About the Facilitator

Jennifer M. Brown is a multi-disciplinary professional, textile designer, and trained deathworker with over a decade of experience managing collaborative fabrication spaces and volunteering in community care networks. Guided by a pursuit of relational care, their work focuses on helping older adults and our elders discover a sense of belonging and agency through the powerful medicine of personal storytelling.
