Motorhome for Death Doula Artist and Cat Clove

from eviction to a home on wheels

Motorhome for Death Doula Artist and Cat Clove is an evolving project at the intersection of art, survival, and the deathcare ecosystem. Created by Jennifer M Brown, this campaign transforms a moment of housing crisis into a visionary, mobile practice rooted in care, documentation, and cultural connection.

Fundraising Overview

After losing stable income and facing eviction, Jennifer is reimagining what a home can be by building a motorhome based studio and sanctuary to safely live, work, and travel alongside their feline companion, Clove.

The Situation

Following the sudden loss of an 8-year contract role due to economic shifts, Jennifer spent nearly a year seeking employment while continuing community work, selling personal belongings, and taking on underpaid labor to survive.

Despite persistent effort and over 20 years of experience, financial instability led to eviction, forcing an URGENT TRANSITION INTO ALTERNATIVE HOUSING.

Rather than framing this as defeat, the project reframes displacement as a crossing of threshold moment, one that opens a path toward mobility, autonomy, and purpose.

The Vision

The campaign centers on establishing a hobbit house on wheels, where the motorhome serves as:

  • A safe and stable living space

  • A mobile art studio

  • A fieldwork base for documenting deathcare practices

  • A traveling point of connection for community care networks

Jennifer’s work explores the evolving deathcare ecosystem including rituals, cultural practices, and community based approaches to grief, transition, and remembrance.

Through travel, documentation, and relationship building, the project aims to map a network of death doulas and care practices across North America, rooted in consent, cultural humility, and storytelling.

The Mission

This work is an extension of Under The Root, an ongoing practice exploring the intersections of art, mortality, and social ecosystems. The mission is to transform personal displacement into a collective offering:

  • Document diverse deathcare traditions and practitioners

  • Build bridges between communities, artists, and caregivers

  • Share knowledge through writing, media, and lived experience

  • Create a sustainable, mobile model of art + death doula care work

Use Of Funds

The FOUNDATIONAL PHASE focuses on safety, stability, and function first, with expansion towards this project to follow. The funds and contributions made will directly support:

  • Purchase of a motorhome

  • Registration, insurance, and legal compliance

  • Mechanical repairs and structural safety upgrades

  • Minimal interior build and adjustments for livability and work

  • Basic infrastructure for long term mobility

Why This Matters?

Housing instability is a growing reality for many artists, caregivers, and independent workers. This project offers a new MODEL OF RESILIENCE, one that transforms crisis into creative infrastructure. By supporting this campaign, donors and collaborators are not only helping secure shelter, but also contributing to:

  • A living archive of death care practices

  • A mobile platform for storytelling and connection

  • A reimagining of home, work, and community
