helping people, animals, and deathcare communities to embolden the threshold between this plane of existence and the mystery of death,
so that the good death is attainable with comfort and ease
Why Under The Root?
We walk the threshold between worlds
Where others focus solely on the death care, we are able to companion you through the small yet mighty deaths - death anxiety, grief and mourning, death rituals and transformations, ego dissolution, and the transitional passageway.
Our work spans the liminal spaces.
Resources that are tough to find gathered together anywhere else :
From community building and deathcare checklists or guides, to the psychedelics and death deep dives, we are indexing resources for outreach and to expand wisdom of the death doula.
We help prepare the next generation of death workers with business ethics and tools :
Through workshops like Be the Lantern Bearer, Death Questions, and Psychedelic Integration Circle Fundamentals, we are building communities of cultural humility, resilience, and perseverence. Collectives of humans who bring their own sophistication - be it clinical, cultural, or from the underground.
For the liberation of each unique human, the tenderness of animal companions we adore, and the expansion of wisdom in deathcare communities
Frequently Asked Questions
-
A death doula provides non-medical, holistic support to individuals and families navigating the transitional thresholds. We offer collections of care that include: threshold preparation and support visits, funeral guidance support, help with legacy planning, and plant medicine companionship. We facilitate difficult conversations and create meaningful rituals. Think of us as tender companions who help you prepare for death with dignity, authenticity, and intention.
-
Not at all. We work with people at all stages of life. Whether you are facing a diagnosis, caring for a dying loved one, dealing with death anxiety, in the throes of grief, or simply want to prepare for the dying process ahead of time. Many clients are young and healthy but want to plan ahead and explore their rights and their unique relationship with mortality.
-
Hospice provides essential medical care through doctors and nurses, while we offer personalized, non-medical support. We complement hospice teams by providing more one-on-one presence, deeper emotional work, and consistent presence throughout the dying process. We can spend our time at bedside, help with extra unforeseen needs, and support families in ways Medicare guidelines do not allow hospice to provide.
-
We start with a conversation to understand your needs, values, and concerns. There is no pressure, this is just an opportunity to meet, ask questions, and see if we are a fit for one another. We will discuss what support looks like for your unique situation and how we can help create a meaningful transition experience.
-
Both. While we center the dying person's wishes and needs, we also provide crucial support to family members and caregivers. This includes education, grief support before and after death, help facilitating difficult conversations, and guidance along the emotional complexity of loss.
-
Yes. We understand that animals and pets are family members; their thresholds deserve the same care and intentionality. We can help you prepare for and navigate the loss of a beloved animal companion with the same tender presence we bring to human, transitional threshold care.
-
Psychedelic integration helps you process and make meaning from experiences with plant medicines or psychedelic substances. In the context of transitional threshold care, these experiences can reduce death anxiety, provide insight, and help people face mortality with more peace and understanding. We provide a safe, non-judgmental, consent driven space to explore these experiences.
-
Every situation is unique, so we discuss pricing during our initial consultation. We offer flexible arrangements based on the level of support you need, whether that is a single planning session or ongoing companionship through the dying process.
-
Absolutely. While in-person presence is powerful, we understand that geography, health concerns, or personal preference may make virtual support more appropriate. We offer video consultations, phone support, and can guide you through clarifying what matters to you, difficult conversations, and grief support or death anxiety, remotely.
